Sports Wood Flooring Installation and Site Requirements

Technical · Installation

A sports wood floor performs only as well as the building it is laid in. Before your LDK floor is delivered, the slab, the climate inside the hall and the building envelope must be ready. This page lists the site entry conditions we ask every project to confirm, and explains how LDK supports the installation. Release the building only after slab, indoor climate, and envelope checks are recorded in the sports wood floor installation stepssports wood floor installation steps guide.

Site entry checklist

What Must Be Ready Before the Floor Arrives

Highlighted items must be confirmed in writing on a site confirmation sheet before installation starts.

Concrete slab

  • Flatness. Surface deviation within 5 mm under a 2 m straightedge, and an overall slope of no more than 1/1000 – a maximum drop of 15 mm over 15 m – in line with GB 50209-2010 (Code for Acceptance of Construction Quality of Building Ground).
  • Strength. Concrete strength of C25 or above. Hollow, cracked or sanding areas must be redone before installation.
  • Moisture. Concrete moisture content below 14% before work begins. We recommend a 28-day curing period followed by at least 10 days of drying; the actual drying time depends on site conditions.
  • Waterproofing. A polyurethane waterproof layer between the concrete layers of the foundation.

Building and climate

  • Power and lighting. Power on site and enough daylight; if the schedule is tight, sufficient working lights must be provided.
  • Interior finishing complete. Ceiling and wall decoration finished, lighting installed and all scaffolding removed from the hall.
  • Ventilation. The ventilation system installed and commissioned, so the hall can be ventilated as the flooring team requires.
  • Humidity. 35–50% relative humidity is best for installing and using a sports wood floor. If the hall stays above 90% or below 30% for more than three days – for example in the rainy season or with winter or underfloor heating – the owner must control it with air conditioning, humidifiers or dehumidifiers.
  • Doors and windows closed. Doors, windows and glazing installed and able to open or close as the flooring work requires, so rain cannot get in.

Water, fire protection and pests

  • Fire protection tested. Fire protection systems installed and commissioned before the floor enters the site. If acceptance testing cannot be arranged in time, fill and pressure-test the system with water first, so leaks are found before the floor is laid.
  • No water leaks. The venue must be free of water leakage. With more than five leakage points, the wood flooring will not be allowed into the venue.
  • Termite protection. Where the region has a termite risk, the owner should appoint a local specialist to treat the foundation and the wood floor.

Delivery and storage

  • Access and storage. Clear delivery and handling routes, with storage space for materials and tools. Once delivered, the floor must be protected from rain, theft and other risks.

Typical build-up

How a Permanent Sports Wood Floor Is Built Up From the Slab

Once the slab passes the checks above, a permanent LDK floor (LDK25W01 shown, 70 mm in total) is built up in this order:

  1. PE moisture barrier – polyethylene moisture-proof film over the slab.
  2. Resilient shock-absorbing pads – 12 mm sports flooring pads for consistent shock absorption under long-term and varying loads.
  3. Joists – 24 mm LVL joists.
  4. Load-bearing panel – 12 mm high-strength laminated plywood.
  5. Non-woven fabric – between the rough board and the surface panel, for moisture resistance and noise reduction.
  6. Surface panel – 22 mm North American maple or Russian birch, with a professional sports flooring coating imported from the USA.

Dismountable floors

Site Planning for Dismountable Floors

Dismountable systems – LDK25W05 modular and LDK25W03 portable competition flooring – are assembled from panels rather than fixed to the slab, so plan for panel handling, an assembly crew, transport routes and dry storage between events. The slab and climate requirements on this page still apply wherever the floor is laid.

FAQ

Installation FAQ

How flat must the concrete slab be for a sports wood floor?

Surface deviation must be within 5 mm under a 2 m straightedge, and the overall slope must not exceed 1/1000, or 15 mm over 15 m.

How dry must the concrete be?

Moisture content must be below 14% before installation. We recommend 28 days of curing and at least 10 days of drying afterwards.

What humidity is best for a sports wood floor?

35–50% relative humidity. If the hall stays above 90% or below 30% for more than three days, humidity should be controlled with air conditioning, humidifiers or dehumidifiers.

Does LDK install the floor?

LDK supplies the complete floor system with a free layout design, site entry requirements and multilingual remote installation guidance. In many regions, installation can also be arranged through our partner installation teams.

When should the floor be delivered to site?

After the ceiling, walls, lighting, ventilation, doors and windows are finished, scaffolding is removed, fire protection has been tested and there are no water leaks.
