Sprung Sports Wood Flooring

Technical · Sprung floors

A sprung sports floor puts a resilient layer between the slab and the playing surface, so the floor gives slightly under impact instead of pushing back like concrete. Every LDK system is a sprung floor: resilient pads or a rubber mat, joists and load-bearing layers under a hardwood surface – in two permanent and two dismountable versions. The resilient layer, pads, joists, and load-bearing layers belong to one assembly, as outlined in sports floor shock absorbing padssports floor shock absorbing pads. What is a sprung floor?

How a Sprung Sports Wood Floor Works

The “spring” in a sports floor does not come from metal springs. It comes from resilient pads under a timber structure: the pads compress under load and recover, while the joists and load-bearing layers spread the load across the floor.

  1. Resilient layer – 12 mm pads (W01, W02), 20 mm pads (W05) or an elastic rubber mat (W03).
  2. Joists – LVL joists, a double pine grid or keelson plates carry the floor above the pads.
  3. Load-bearing layer – plywood, composite board or a rough board / load panel spreads the load.
  4. Hardwood surface – 22 mm maple or birch (W01, W02, W05) or high-grade maple panels (W03).

Are all LDK floors sprung floors?

Yes. All four LDK systems have a resilient layer: 12 mm pads in W01 and W02, 20 mm pads in W05 and an elastic rubber mat in W03.

How thick is a sprung sports wood floor?

LDK systems are 70 mm (W01), 114 mm (W02), 84 mm (W05) and 88 mm (W03) in total.

Can a sprung floor be laid on concrete?

Yes, on a flat, dry slab: within 5 mm under a 2 m straightedge, C25 concrete or stronger and moisture below 14%.
