Basketball Gym Planning: Wood Flooring and Court Layout

Applications · Basketball gyms

Basketball halls with sports wood floors are usually built by clubs, schools and universities – and a wood floor is a significant investment. The way to get the most out of it is to plan the whole hall from the start: the floor system, how many courts it can hold for training, how the hoops move out of the way, and the lighting and sound above it. Plan court count together with lighting, sound, and hoop movement when reviewing indoor basketball court flooringindoor basketball court flooring for a full hall. Who it is for

Who Builds a Wood-Floor Basketball Gym?

Clubs and training centres

Halls that run training sessions all day and need to fit several teams on the floor at once.

Schools

PE classes, school teams and events in the same hall.

Universities

Large multi-court halls with long daily schedules.

Private courts

Private basketball gyms where the court is also a place to relax – see the sound tip below.

Step 1

Choose the Floor System for How the Hall Will Be Used

All four systems are supplied complete – surface, load-bearing layers, joists and resilient pads. The 22 mm surfaces of W01, W02 and W05 are available in North American maple or Russian birch; W03 has a high-grade maple surface. How the four subfloors differ →

Step 2

Turn One Full Court Into Three Training Courts

During training you rarely need one full court for one group. Add side-mounted hoops along the court and separate the cross-courts with divider curtains, and one full court becomes three training courts. A hall with two full courts can run six training courts at the same time – and still open up into two full courts for games.

Circles: side-mounted hoops · Dashed lines: divider curtains · 2 full courts = 6 training courts

Divider curtains are a significant cost in themselves, so include them in the budget from the start rather than adding them later.

Step 3

Choose Hoops That Clear the Floor

Recommended

Ceiling-suspended hoops

Mounted to the roof structure and folded up when not in use, so the floor is completely clear for other sports, events or cleaning. Our first recommendation for clubs, schools and universities.

Alternative

In-ground hoops

Anchored into the floor structure – the second choice when ceiling-suspended systems are not used.

Step 4

Lighting and Sound From the Same Supplier

Lighting

LDK supplies the lighting with your floor. For reference, the general competition-level basketball halls we have equipped average around 500 lux.

Sound

LDK can supply the sound system too. For private courts we suggest placing the speakers in opposite corners, so music fills the whole court.

One project plan

Floor, hoops, curtains, lighting and sound planned together, so every part fits the same hall layout.

FAQ

Basketball Gym Planning FAQ

How many training courts can fit in one full basketball court?

Three. By adding side-mounted hoops and divider curtains, one full court can be used as three cross-courts for training, so two full courts give you six.

Which basketball hoops work best with a wood floor gym?

For clubs, schools and universities we usually recommend ceiling-suspended hoops, which fold up to leave the floor clear. In-ground hoops are the alternative.

Can LDK supply lighting and sound as well as the floor?

Yes. LDK supplies lighting and sound systems in the same project as the floor.

What size of hall do you usually quote?

Any size from one court upwards. A typical basketball hall quotation is for 32 × 19 m (608 m²).
